Plot:

An orphaned sister (Ellie) and brother (Jimmy) are involved in a car crash that involves a wild animal and another oncoming car in the hills of Los Angeles. The second car is hit and rolls off the road. Ellie and Jimmy climb down the embankment to help survivors. There is a single female trapped in the car. Jimmy crawls into the overturned car to help the female.

Once freed, an unknown beast...hint: a werewolf...pulls the female from the wreckage and out of the wreckage. Jimmy grasps onto the woman and Ellie holds onto Jimmy as the werewolf drags the three into the woods. Eventually the beast attacks the three, killing the woman, biting Ellie on the arm and slashing Jimmy across the chest before fleeing into the darkness.

Soon afterwards Jimmy and Ellie start experiencing weird physicals phenomenons as they slowly change into werewolves. They learn that they must find and kill their attacker to break the "curse" or fully become the legendary beast themselves. Jimmy, still in high school, uses his new found abilities to defeat the school's wrestling bully, Bo, and snag his girlfriend, Brooke. While Ellie, an assistant on the famed "Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn", battles through her own personal soap operas involving a mysterious boyfriend, Jake, and vicious female coworker, Joanie.

Ellie denies the possibility of becoming a werewolf, while Jimmy engulfs the "cursed" idea. He researches and constantly points out clues to his sister as she denies it. Eventually Ellie comes to the notion of whats going on as the city becomes under heat with mysterious random animal attacks. They also learn that someone close to them is the attacker and must be killed to free the of the curse.

Despite being made and distributed as a PG-13 to entice younger audiences, I liked this movie. Of course, I've only seen the unrated version, so throw that PG-13 crap out the window, but I found this to be an enjoyable werewolf movie. It has a "soft spot" in my heart...including Shannon Elizabeth (Pictured below).

I love the cast to the movie. Especially the lead female. I love Christina Ricci in general. She's an awesome actress and cute as a button. Unfortunately she does show off her body in this one, but wears some smokin' hot dresses to make up for it. Her performance as a psychological troubled older sister taking care of her younger brother was okay. But she gets a pass for being...Christina Ricci...pictured below.

Jesse Eisenberg portrays the geeky, goofy looking younger brother Jimmy. His character is dorky enough to be someone that I can root for and relate with. He's quick to embrace the werewolf idea as everyone around him doesn't believe him and chalks it up as "that's just the sci-fi geek talking".

Jimmy slobbers over the school's hottie, Brooke, only to be tripped up by her "over-manly" wrestling boyfriend, Bo. Bo's character is played by actor Milo Ventimiglia. Who? Geeks around the world, knows him best as Peter Petrelli from the hit television show, Heroes. It's kind of funny seeing a much younger Milo play a "tough" wrestler and school bully. Even better, the film turns him into an "out of the closet" gay kid wanting to embrace his new found sexuality. Back to the cutie Brooke...actress Kristina Anapau pictured left.

Speaking of "out of the closet", Portia de Rossi pops up in the film as a psychic gypsy woman. Portia herself, is most famous for being the love squeeze to Ellen DeGeneres. Man she's hot. I liked to see her in more of those lesbian make out scenes. Also starred in one of my favorite cancelled television shows, Arrested Development.

The other cast members of the movie are pretty good. Joshua Jackson plays the mysterious boyfriend, and Judy Greer plays the mean, evil, bitch assistant. She's also a Arrested Development alumni. Craig Kilborn, Lance Bass (NSYNC*), and Scott Baio make cameo appearances as themselves. Scott Baio? WHYYYYYYYYY? Shannon Elizabeth and musician Mya, appear in the film to boost the "eye candy" category. Sorry, "no raped to death by a snowman" ending for Shannon.

On a personal anticipation note: Derek Mears plays the man behind the werewolf suit. Many people wouldn't recognize Derek in his movie roles, mostly because he's always that man behind the mask and make-up. Why is he relevant on a personal note? Well just in case you haven't heard, he'll be playing a certain machete wielding, hockey mask wearing psychopath in an upcoming movie that opens on Friday, February 13th, 2009. Other hints: check out the picture on the right hand side of the blog. NOT the current hot chick, but the one below it. Or look at my horror movie reviews # 2-13.

This film almost died and never got off the production line because of script problems. After a year of script revision, re shoots, recast, the film finally hit the big screen. I would like to see all the changes that were done. A little disappointed by the cast that was sacrificed off the film (see list below). Despite the numerous problems this film had getting on track, it was in my opinion a good movie to sit down and watch. It wasn't too bizarre or off the charts, and stayed true to some simple werewolf ideas and plot points.

Review #81: Mulberry Street (2006)

Plot:

A deadly infection spreads across Manhattan causing people to devolve into rats. And then the rats bite people, turning them subsequently into zombie-human-rats. The vicious cycle goes round and round as the Manhattan population encounters the infected. The film focuses and revolves around six tenants at an apartment building and explores their survival story as they fight off the zombie-rats attacking Manhattan. One of the tenants daughter is returning home from the military and she battles the outbreak elements as she ventures through Manhattan trying to get home. Mulberry Street refers to the street that the six tenants live on.

Mulberry Street was one of the After Dark Horrorfest 07' 8 Films to Die For selection. I loved the idea of the Horrorfest, but so far my reception of the films that I've seen has been very bleak. I think that Showtime's Masters of Horror series is actually better compared to the Horrorfest's movies. I've seen 6 of the 8 released for the 06' festival (Dark Ride review) and 2 of the 07's 8. And I've enjoyed probably about three of them and just didn't really care for the rest. This film rates as the best one that I've seen so far.

I love zombie movies in general. There's no secret about it. Honestly I haven't gotten around to reviewing my favorite ones, but eventually I will. This movie is kinda like 28 Days Later, Dawn of the Dead, and Willard mixed into one. So for me this film was pretty good. Any type of end of the world zombie disaster movie is alright in my book. Besides, how can anyone go wrong with zombie-human-rats? Especially zombie-human-rats taking over New York. No answer? That's what I thought.

The characters are pretty sub par, but that didn't matter, it actually reflected better that way in the film. The apartment tenants were just a bunch of average day "Joe's" fighting the elements. No real character development or attachment. Again, didn't matter. Did I really care for any of them? No. But the actors/actresses playing the parts did a fine job in their roles.

Most zombie movies have similar plots and endings. I thought M.Street delivered some new ideas to a genre which I've thought that I've seen it all. First of all, I liked the ending of the film. Most zombie flicks pretty much end the film look end of the worldish. M.Street kept the outbreak isolated to the island of Manhattan and eventually our slow acting government stepped in with their plan of action.

Secondly, the film brought us the zombie-human-rat. What a fresh idea! Why does every zombie movie just have human zombies? Why not mix zombie with a little rodent? Two words: breath taking. Unfortunately the look wasn't there, but it was a great idea. For the most part, the zombies were still in human form, but this idea may lay the groundwork down for something special in the future.

If you happen to check out any of the After Dark Film's Horrorfest movies, then make sure this is one of them. It starts off a little slow, but just hang in there, it gets better. A lot better. I've liked most of the Masters of Horror one hour movies more than I've liked any of the Horrorfest movies, but M.Street hangs tough with the competition.

Tagline: The South Will Rise Again!

Plot:

Three college boys (Anderson, Nelson, and Cory) head south to Daytona Beach for spring break. While driving through Georgia, they experience a detour that leads them to a very, very small southern town called Pleasant Valley. Population: 2001.

Once there they are greeted by the town's folk, who are extremely happy to see them. Leading the town is Major Buckman (Robert Englund) who invites them to stay as their guests. Also arriving to the town via detour are Joey, Kat, and Ricky, who the frat boys had previously met up with at a gas station down the road. One last couple to arrive are Malcolm and Leah strolling in on a motorcylce. The towns folk aren't too happy to see them. Malcolm is black and Leah is Asian. BHA!

With the help of the town's hot young women and a verbal pack between Joey and Anderson, the town persuades the visitors to stay a few days for their annual Guts N' Glory Jubilee.

The eight are treated with a royal taste of southern hospitality as they stay for free at Granny Boone's house. Free food, free alcohol, and free room and board. Paradise...right?

Unfortunately the eight don't know that besides being the guests of honor, they are actually the targets for the main course at the BBQ dinner. One by one, each of the eight are isolated and killed in preparation for the feast. The South will Rise Again! Yee-haw! Break out the banjo's and kiss your sisters and cousins!

Honestly this film is one of my favorites. It has a soft spot in my heart. 2K1 Maniacs is a hell of a treat for a horror fan. 2K1 is considered a pretty low budget film, but it has a big budget affect. 2K1 has all the ingredients for a horror movie. Isolation, blood, hot chicks, boobies, sex acts, cheesy dialogue, big name actors and little plot. It's a perfect description of the inbred southerners. That's if what you image the South to be.

Realistically, I know this film isn't..."The Best", but it's a great film to sit down, make fun of and come out happy. A lot of the kills are silly and let's just say...maybe unrealistic, but who cares? The 4-point Horse death...photo above...yeah...I doubt that could happen, but it was fresh and enjoyable to watch.

The Milk Maid's Tube of Acid (or whatever that was) was complete over the top gore cheesiness. But I have to say, "What a way to go out." Check out the film's unnamed Milk Maid, Christa Campbell (pictured right).

I need those jugs...of milk.

Okay, that's enough...for now. Freshly squeezed...okay, that's the last one.

The movie also dips into a little history lesson about the south. My friend, "The Shark" has his favorite historical figure, General William Sherman mentioned in the film. The Southern Storm!

I know it isn't a "deep" history lesson, but the film does include the General in a small subplot and his famous march through the south, leaving a particular town...hmm...Pleasant Valley...part of it's wake of ashes. Look at him. The Generals got the look of crazy, alcoholic Uncle Billy! Doesn't he?

On the Tommy G scale for TNA, it's off the charts receiving the highest grade standard. Many hot chicks who end up having sex at some point, with a man or a chick, and most show off their twins.

2K1 has chick pillow fights, bondage scenes, bath tub rubs, skimpy/skanky clothed women, and lesbians making out (pictured to the left...at least a glimpse). WOW! How could you top that?! And the hottie in the pink bikini to the right is the main female in the film, Joey (Marla Malcolm). I'd like to be Malcolmed in that Middle!

The film is definitely tongue and cheek...and a little dash of pillow twins mixed in. 2K1 is actually a film where I see Robert Englund acting and I don't immediately start thinking, "When's he gonna put on the Christmas sweater and glove?" Englund portrays an awesome red neck southern boy in this film. He wears a Confederate Flag patch over his left eye, and talks the southern talk really well.

Did I rate this film too high? Maybe. But I don't care...SUCK ON IT! The South Will Rise Again! I hope not. If you're really bored and need cheap entertainment then check this one out. Luckily for us, there's an upcoming sequel to it: 2001 Maniacs 2: The Beverly Hellbillys. Sweet.

Review #79: The Midnight Meat Train (2008)

Plot:

A photographer, Leon, goes out one night to take interesting photographs. He secretly follows three hoodlums into the subway system to take their pictures. Leon ends up saving a woman (model Erika Sakaki) who is attacked by the gang. She gives him as kiss for saving her life, and then catches the train. Erika goes missing by the next day. Leon later finds clues in the photos he has taken that leads him to discover that a mysterious man from that night may be a serial killer, The Subway Butcher.

After further research, Leon learns that there have been people going missing in the subway for at least a hundred years. Leon shows his photos to the police and they seem more interested in him than they believe Leon's tale. Leon's involvement quickly turns into a dark obsession in finding the man and solving this crime.

During his obsession, he alienates himself from his girlfriend, Maya. Maya becomes upset his quest, and one day after Leon returns home severely wound and acting very unusual, she begins her own investigation. Maya and one of their friends, Jurgis, investigate the man who may be the butcher using the photographs Leon has been taking. After breaking and entering the mysterious man's apartment, Jurgis ends up captured when the man returns.

Maya heads straight for the police after the encounter, but the police do not believe Maya's story. The lead detective on the case shows up at Maya's work and give her information that Jurgis will be on the 2 a.m. train for 14th St. Maya heads down on her own to save Jurgis. Leon, unaware of Maya's involvement, prepares himself to kill the butcher and end the horror. Leon, Maya and the butcher end up meeting each other on that train and the climactic battle ensues.

The top three characters, Leon, Maya and Mahogany all played great roles in the film. Not bad for a former soccer guy. Or as the rest of the world puts it, former footballer. All Leslie Bibb needed to do was look and act hot. Pictured below. Mission accomplished. Almost, I mean almost got to see a little peek at her peaks. Such a tease!

TMMT (T squared with a M squared sandwhich) is one of those independant films that never got released in mass theathres, and ended up straight to video. Luckily for me, it was given a premier on Demand for free! Courtesy of FearNet. I saw trailers for it on-line, but didn't really show any desire or anticipation for the film. I figured it would have been "one of those movies to rent when I'm bored".

I have to admit, I actually liked it. At least 4/5 of it. I thought the end got a little too weird or Mimic-ish. I probably would have given it a higher grade, but the ending was really sour for me. It went down a road, I did not think it needed to. It's based off a Clive Barker short story. I don't know if his original ending went down that road or not.

The kills in the film were nice and brutal. That soccer dude can sure swing a mean ole' hook and hammer. Despite American beliefs, he did not fall down, cry and grab an imaginary injured foot. He stayed tough. No flopping in this one. At least "live body" flopping.

On a bizarre random side note, the cutie at the begining, Erika Sakai, is an actress named Nora. Yep. Nora. I guess it's like Prince. Just Nora. Oh well, she looked hot (pictured right). BHA! I'm not complaining if that's what she has to offer the world.
Like I've mentioned before, the ending really let the air out of the bag for me. It was a similar experience I had at the end of Jeepers Creepers. A lot of cool sh*t capped by a crappy ending like that. Not a big fan of that movie. I wasn't as devistated about this ending. Probably because I had little expectation with this one. Remember that young, good looking girl from that Blue Lagoon movie? There she is pictured left. Still got it. Got Whipped Cream?

Review #78: Pulse (2006)

Plot:
A college student, Josh, comes across an evil human spirit in the library and a few days later he hangs himself in front of his girlfriend, Mattie. Shortly afterwards, Mattie is chatting on-line and she receives an IM (Instant Message for those older folks) from Josh, "Help me." Mattie gets upset and then she and her friends plays it off as a computer virus.

Later on Mattie goes to track down Josh's computer to see if anyone has been playing a joke on her. She finds out that his landlord has sold it to another person, Dexter. On a side note: the landlord is the black chick that Billy Bob Thorton bangs hard in the movie Bad Santa. "I won't sh*t right for a week." That is a great movie! Kristen Bell pictured below...that's a great lookin' gal!

Mattie tracks down Dexter and confronts...bitches...him out about sending IM's to her pretending to be Josh. Already signs of an unstable woman...hmm? Dexter claims he knows nothing about it and proves to her by showing her Josh's computer disassembled in the trunk of his car. Mattie then receives a package from Josh with a zip drive and red tape inside and a note stating, "It helps keep them out." Meanwhile, the city is experiencing an epidemic of suicides. Yawn! Pretty boring right?

Dexter reassembles the computer and discovers some horrific video feeds of suicide and shows them to Mattie. She freaks out and gets pissed off at him for showing her. And then she starts seeing weird glimpses of dead people as other civilians are randomly committing suicide around the city. The population starts to dwindle and no one seems to be talking about it except Mattie. What do they call that...hear no evil, speak no evil?

Eventually her friends die off one by one and we learn that the world is being taken over by evil spirits who are using our technology to spill into our world. Dexter and Mattie learns that Josh had hacked into a Professor Zieglar's computer project.

Zieglar was working on a project that involved "frequencies we never knew existed"...like FM radio! Josh had accidentally opened a door way to our world through these frequencies. An the evil spirits have been slowly entering into our world. Even the slightest cell phone signal allows the evil spirits to enter the world. It seems that plastering the red tape all around the room helps keep out the spirits.

Dexter has figured out that the zip drive Josh sent Mattie was a virus created to stop the spirits. They ask Zieglar were his server is and then leave with hopes of uploading the virus and destroying the spirits. Unfortunately they fail and Dexter and Mattie make a break for the countryside abandoning all technology behind. Moral of the story: technology is evil. Didn't Battlestar Galactica teach us that?

This film is based loosely off a Japanese version named, Kairo (2001). While both films do not venture down the same plot line, they do share some common themes. Both films focus on suicide and loneliness. Kairo focuses on death and the afterlife are nothing but eternal loneliness while the American version is based on technology bringing back the dead spirits through a new form of communication. I would like to communicate with Christian Milian! (pictured right) I know where I would put my ear to listen.

Pulse...that's something I had to check after watching it...to see if I'm still alive or just furious. I'm not a big fan of this movie. It's kind of painful to watch. The pace is too slow and many things are not easily explained. The movie would be wayyy much better if it had just skipped to the last twenty minutes.

Pulse takes a few watchings to actually figure out what's really going on...probably because I got so bored watching it. I've seen it around four or five times now, and it's still unbearable to watch...at least for me. I guess that's what they studios get for releasing another pile of crap PG-13 movie. If Kristen Bell wasn't around for eye candy, then this movie would completely suck.

The style and setting of the film is completely dark, I guess it rematches the movie's tone and theme of suicide and death. It's done very closely to the style of many of the Japanese supernatural horror films, which usually I tend to like. But for some odd reason, Pulse didn't do anything for me.

Even with the dark style, the movie doesn't really present itself as creepy or scary. If you're looking for a film with a splash of color, then keeping going and pass on this one. As a gift I'll leave you with another picture of Kristen Bell to add color to the darkness.

Review #77: Luther the Geek (1990)

Here’s what the back of the DVD reads:
A young country boy is plunged into the depths of homicidal madness after witnessing the strange exploits of a carnival “geek”, a caged drunk so desperate for whiskey that he bites the heads off live chickens in front of a freak show audience.

Thirty years later, Luther is all grown up and out on parole after spending his childhood behind bars for a series of grisly murders. Armed with a pair of razor-sharp metal dentures and only able to communicate through chicken clucks, Luther restarts his bloody rampage as he terrorizes the citizens of a small town and takes a young mother and her family hostage in their isolated farmhouse.

Featuring one of the most intense endings ever put on film, Luther the Geek is good gory fun in the splatter flick tradition!

Yep, it says it all. How can I top that? Actually it explains the plot better than the movie did. You know when young country boys are “plunged” into the depths of homicidal madness, only one thing can happen…homicidal tendencies. By the way, if you don't know, a "Geek" is an old carnival term. Usually it referred to a man that would bite the heads off chickens, rats or bats (or anything else). It can also be defined as a...nerd. But in this case, the carnival dude with homicidal tendencies.

You may be asking, "Where did you find this one?" Actually it was years ago. About 15 years ago I “plunged” myself down to watch this Troma bad-boy with a couple of friends. It was one of those nights where we decided to go rent a movie, but didn't really have any particular one or genre in mind. I remember strolling through the video story looking for a flick to rent with my friends, and the title caught my eye. So we rented it. So sue me. Luther the Geek. Come on’, who wouldn’t wanna rent this one? It’s like judging a book on its cover, but better. It’s finger-licking good! Boy were we in for a treat. Bad acting and horrible effects, but surprisingly a decent film.

As far as, “Featuring one of the most intense endings ever put on film” I don’t know what movie they were watching. Certainly not this one. I kind of thought the last half of the film kind of, well, sucked. The trooper walking through the barn sequence was drawn out a little too much. Intense...not really. If you look at the "whole" picture, given the production, budget, talent and everything else poured into a movie, then the ending was pretty good. But to call it "one of the most intense endings ever put on film"...yeah, I don't think so. But the film did some justice for the horror genre.

The film’s brilliance has Luther walking around making chicken clucks throughout the film. Bock, Brrrrk Brrrrk Brk. Now that was JUST awesome. To top it off, Luther uses razor sharp metal teeth to bite his victims to death. Pure Grade A writing there folks. The film showcases the finest writing on the Earth, just as golden as the Colonel’s secret recipe.

For this being a Troma film, it actually isn’t that bad or too terribly done. The production quality doesn’t look like a fourth grader with a camcorder filmed it like many of the Troma films I've seen. The film was cut and edited with true professionalism. Even the late Colonel Sanders would have to agree on that. Was it top notch? Well I wouldn't go that far. Just enough to be satisfying.

Amazing film facts:
- Luther the Geek is 3 initials when abbreviated (LTG). Kentucky Fried Chicken is also 3 initials(KFC)

- Chicken is better than meat
- Cops never survive horror movies
- A "model" inmate doesn't exsist

So grab a bucket of your favorite KFC’s original or crispy flavored chicken and maybe grab a tall malt beverage (not whiskey...it will drive you to bite off chicken heads) sit down and enjoy this masterpiece. There's even a kick-a** shower scene! Followed by a sweet sex scene. Got your attention yet?
